Developed same problem all of a sudden. Wasted time with Microsoft tech - told him I have ALWAYS been able to run MOD files, all of a sudden not able to. Error message tells me Windows media player no longer working, Microsoft is looking into it, will notify me when solution found. Looking on Microsoft webpage all I could find was community pages. Finally found access to tech support for disabled users. Hey, besides disability parking this seems to be a viable benefit. Anyway, tech support followed same line of questioning as you have experienced - somehow you are trying to use files not supported by windows media player. Regardless of the fact I told him I always used windows media player for these files, and about 3000 posts on community pages complaining of same issue. After allowing that tech access to my computer (regret that) he just kept telling me windows media player does not support MOD files, regardless of what I said. Then after multiple back and forth about how it seemed to be a Microsoft issue, he 'mentioned' that an update might cause a file format to not work anymore. I had experienced an automatic update a day or so ago, and then it clicked. The update for whatever reason, removed MOD files from those accessible by Windows media player. WHY, pray tell, did the techie not know that and inform me of that right away, instead of trying to tell me it was my issue because I was trying to run MOD files on windows media player, which simply no longer support that file type? Hopefully that techie caused no harm and stole no files when I allowed him into my computer. I should never have done that. Hopefully you did not do so.
Did you experience an update right before you lost the ability to run MOD files? That might be the cause of your problem. Microsoft techies should know that and if they do they should be forthcoming and not mislead.

While Windows 10's Continuum feature allows it to adapt between touch screen and PC-focused modes, catering for convertible devices and laptops, Microsoft will still be offering several different versions or 'Editions' of its new operating system. There will be at least seven distinctly different versions when Windows 10 is released in late July. See more - Windows 10 To Be 'Last Version Of Windows' These bear some similarity to previous ranges with 'Home', 'Pro' and 'Enterprise' in the mix too - much the same as Windows 7 and Windows 8. In its Windows Blog, Tony Prophet - Microsofts
Corporate Vice President for Windows and Search Marketing stated:As in the past, we will offer different Windows editions that are tailored for various device families and uses. These different editions address specific needs of our various customers, from consumers to small businesses to the largest enterprises.
This does make sense given that many people simply don't need certain features included with the 'Pro' or 'Enterprise' versions and installing them would simply take up more hard disk space and be harder to run on less powerful devices. So, here's the full rundown of the different versions:
Windows 10 Home - the best option for basic users
The Windows 10 for all - while this is one of the more basic versions, the vast majority of the Windows 10 features you've likely heard about are included. The Cortana digital assistant, Microsoft's new web browser Edge (replacing Internet Explorer), Continuum, which allows the operating system to switch from desktop to touch mode on relevant devices, plus a new range of integrated apps such as Photos, Mail and Calendar - will all be in the mix.
New features such as the Edge browser - Internet Explorer's replacement will be included in all versions of Windows 10
Windows 10 Pro - business and advanced users As usual, 'Pro' is essentially 'Home' with a few extra features bolted on that advanced and business users will likely want to take advantage of. Additional data protection, remote features, cloud technologies and perhaps more interestingly Windows Update for Business will be the main additions. The latter will allow access to its advanced update rollout features such as peer to peer delivery, which can boost update speeds so whether you're a business user or just the resident computer expert at home, you'll likely want to go 'Pro' - see

There's also the ability to use distribution rings to specify which devices get updates first - you might want to hold off on some areas of your business until the updates have been tested for example. There will also be quicker access to security updates. You can read more about Windows Update for Business here.
Pro and Enterprise versions will allow advanced roll-out features for updates, such as peer-to-peer update sharing for quicker installation
Windows 10 Mobile - smartphones and small tablets Focussing on touch-centric devices, Windows 10 Mobile will be available for smartphones and small tablets while including many of the same core features as other versions of the new OS. These include the universal apps such as Photos and Mail, a new touch-optimized version of Office and also Continuum. The latter might seem odd - why would you want to use your smartphone in 'PC mode' - the fact is that many small devices can connect to larger screens where it makes more sense to opt for a PC interface. Windows 10 Enterprise - large organizations Security is a big focus here - 'advanced capabilities to help protect against the ever-growing range of modern security threats' while the version will also support 'the broadest range of options for operating system deployment and comprehensive device and app management'. Windows 10 Enterprise also offers Volume Licensing, although Microsoft dropped a rather worrying hint here:
'Volume Licensing customers.. can take advantage of the latest innovation and security updates on an ongoing basis'

Does this mean that the lower versions might not have unlimited access to some features? It seems there might be some hidden caveats. Windows 10 Education - Schools and academic volume licensing This version is fairly self-explanatory and builds on Windows 10 Enterprise, offering both staff, system admins, teachers and students tailor-made experiences depending on their needs. Windows 10 Mobile Enterprise - Business phones and tablets As well as providing the standard Windows 10 built-in apps that the standard Mobile version includes, the Enterprise version adds additional security features plus extra update management tools similar to those available with Windows 10 Enterprise, as well as providing early access to security and innovation features.
Windows 10 Mobile will be a touch-centric interface, but still includes Continuum, which will allow the OS to switch to 'PC mode' if you connect your tablet or smartphone to a larger screen.

Both versions of Windows 10 Enterprise will be split down further to cater for devices such as ATMs, retail point of sale and handheld terminals, while a final version - Windows 10 IoT Core, caters for small, low-cost devices such as gateways and presumably digital signage too. So, for most home users Windows 10 Home will likely be the one to go for, while for others, Pro or even Enterprise might be best, especially as they offer the more advanced update roll-out features that will certainly benefit anyone that reinstalls Windows periodically.
